None of us expect to experience murder in our family. But, murder does happen to families across neighbourhood demographics. This is a deeply personal and profoundly generous account of one family’s lived experience of murder. Beginning from the day of her 13-year-old sister Kathy’s disappearance in November, 1971 and across the too-many years of media and investigative involvement in the yet unresolved murder of Kathy Gloddy, Karen Beaudin brings and takes the reader into her family’s home, life, mind and heart in living with murder in their family. The author describes and discusses the impact of the murder on individual family members and their responses. Writing from her place as one of Kathy’s sisters, Karen Beaudin’s presence is tangible to the reader through her deep, generous and transparent reach to portray cleanly, clearly, and fully how she has endured and lives both the never-endingness and foreverness of her sister’s murder. A Child Is Missing will be as much a resource to families as it will be a resource and teaching tool for victim service providers and for mental health, police, media and criminal justice professionals. A haunting, poignant, bothersome, humbling and thought-provoking narrative that remains with me.

A Child Is Missing can now be pre-ordered on www.karenbeaudin.com   Sara Powell Smith did a great job on the website,  The paperback should be available early April and all copies ordered through the author will be signed.

I discussed with Tate Publishing whether to go hard cover or paperback, they disclosed to me the differences.   I chose to keep the book in paperback.  It keeps the expenses down and makes it more available to everyone.  In this economy, it’s a luxury to purchase a book.

I pray Kathy would be pleased with the way I told her story.  It’s told with much love, many tears and an ache in my heart to see her again.  I love you Kathy….

A Child Is Missing is in the printing stage.  Wow, it’s surreal to know that as I write this update the pages to my book are actually being printed.  I’m in the marketing stage now.  Filling out information for Tate Publishing about me, the author so they can best market the book.

1/24/2010

Here is an update on what is happening with the book.  The final proofing is done and this Monday all the information will be sent to the publishers.  They will look at the final changes to be made and once they are finished printing will begin.  Tate Publishing has informed me that it will take four weeks to finish printing.  The books will be shipped to the warehouses and me and then a press release will be made.  A website is in the works so the book can be ordered from me when it is available.  I’m still expecting the book to be released in April.

1/7/2010   I received a copy of   A Child Is Missing.  This copy of the book is to make the last corrections before it goes to print.

When I first opened the package and saw the front and back cover it literally gave me goosebumps.  I flipped through it and was so happy to finally  see the fruits of all the hard work that went into writing and editing.   Especially because the last two years have been very difficult for me.   A personal trial that has brought much pain and sadness.  The fact that I could finish writing and get this book accepted by a publishing company is a tremendous achievement.  I had to pull myself up and keep going even on the days I didn’t feel I could.

My first goal in writing this book was to glorify the Lord, He led me all the way.  Secondly, it was to get Kathy’s story out and how devastating it was to go through such an ordeal as having a sister brutally murdered.  Thirdly, I hope that getting this book out might bring a person forward with crucial information to finally charge someone with Kathy’s murder.

The release date is still April, any changes and I will let you know.

12/20/2009  The book is now in the second stage of layout.  The first stage was approving how the layout, how it looked online. I printed a few pages to make sure the font was okay.  Now the publishers will print the real book for me to look at, once again I will go through it from beginning to end and make sure everything looks okay.   I will be looking  for any words that might be repeated, spacing that might be off etc.  This will be the last stage before they begin printing the book, A Child Is Missing.  Every month gets closer to the day it will finally be complete.

12/2/2009  The editing is finished!  Two intensive edits but the results were worth it.  I thought the editors would do all that work, obviously I didn’t have a clue about the process.  I’ve learned so much from writing this book and hopefully the next one,  “A Child Is Missing-Searching For Justice”  will be a little easier when it comes to editing.

11/25/2009  The book cover is chosen and I am very pleased with it.  I talked to the publishing company on some ideas I had and they created some covers from that.  I had four to choose from and I picked cover one.  To see the cover was so amazing and it made me realize even more that my writing was actually going to become a book.  They haven’t changed the release date yet, it’s still April of 2010.  If there is a change, I will let you know.

11/20/2009  Update on the book:  My daughter Joscelyn and I just went through 45 hours of editing, we laughed and we cried.  It was an emotional ride.  It was the first time Joscelyn had read through the entire book.   Though the editing from beginning to end was grueling, it was needed and I’m happy with the results.  This should be the last stage of editing and then we go to lay out.  The book cover is being worked on right now and hopefully this week I will get three designs to look at.  I was able to work with the publishers on what I have imagined for a cover.  Reality is starting to set in,  “A Child Is Missing”  is one step closer to becoming a book.

Karen’s book, “A Child Is Missing” is in the editing stage right now.  Her manuscript was accepted by Tate Publishing and has an expected release date of April, 2010.  Her goals in writing this book are threefold.  First, to glorify God with her faith. Secondly, that someone reading it might come forward with some valuable information.  And thirdly, to express what it was like to grow up knowing her sister was brutally raped and murdered.

Hello Karen, O God I remember… It is something that I will never forget. My mother was so upset I remember her crying . And she didnt even know the Gloddy Family. I hope peace will come to you and your family. Wishing the or they SOB would confess. I was told there is more than one suspect involved or person involved. Hope they are brought to justice… I would love to get your book when it is available. Thank You and Take Care, Debbie

Thank you Deb for still caring about Kathy’s case and wishing for justice even after all these years. Her murder changed the way many of us in that little town looked at life. The town was emotionally torn. I’m hoping with the Cold Case Unit that my sisters and I fought for and was priviledged to see become reality on Dec. 1, 2009, will help Kathy’s case. But not only hers, there are over 100 unsolved murders and we hope that some of them will see justice.
Thank you for your comment and for caring,
      Karen

  2. Renee Ames Says:

Karen, I just started your book tonight and am more than half way through it. My heart breaks for all you and your family went through. I remember a long time ago when my children were infants and toddlers you had sent me an encouraging card. “When you are at the end of your rope, tie a knot in it and hang on” You have always had a special place in my heart since meeting you in 1982. I will always think and pray for you in a different way but am thankful that God has Always seen and known you and your family and as you say so many times in your book, your sisters death was the product of sin and evil and God Loves us and wants a relationship with us and all good gifts are from God…… I will continue to pray for your current state of being and as you write the next book. I Love you and your example to me as a wife and mother and will always be thankful that God saw fit that we were in the same church family for so many years. May God truly continue to bless you and give you comfort in this sinful world till He Returns for His Bride.

    Love,
A Sister in Jesus our Lord,
    Renee

      Renee,
Thank you for your beautiful words and memories. Whatever we go through we must remember that God is stability in a world that is so unstable. I still pray for miracles and know that He is powerful enough to do them. While I wait, sometimes it’s in pain but I hold on to what I know is truth.
      Love,
      Karen

  3. Lucy Twombly Says:

The author has told the story of the brutal murder of her sister by putting all of her emotions into the book for all of us to experience. While reading “A Child Is Missing” I felt like I was there! What a shame that this case has not been solved! The book is a must read for any of us who remember Kathy Gloddy’s murder. It will appeal to anyone who likes to read murder mysteries.

    • kbeaudin Says:

      Lucy,
Thank you for your comment and support. Yes, tears were shed on the pages of this book and though you can’t see them, the invisible stains are there. Many suffered because of Kathy’s murder and have never forgotten.
      Love,
      Karen
